Sonehal Kooner

Solicitor

Sonehal is a highly experienced litigation lawyer, acting for clients across a range of matters, spanning all forms of civil and commercial litigation. Prior to joining Barretts, he was an Associate Director and has held senior leadership roles throughout his career. Over the course of this, Sonehal has acted on behalf of and advised: lay individuals; SMEs; professional sports clubs and athletes; many government departments (including the Ministry of Justice, Office of the Public Guardian, HMPPS, and the Probation Service); some of the largest insurers; their insured; along with other defence organisations and major institutions. Having studied Law in both England and Italy, he maintains a considerable portfolio of cross-jurisdictional work and regularly receives instructions from clients outside of England and Wales. His broad experience allows him to appreciate and understand the needs of both his clients and his opponents, which often leads to a successful resolution of a matter without the need to resort to litigation. He has an excellent record of resolving disputes quickly, cost-effectively, and with great success for his clients. Sonehal appeared as one of the faces of the Law Society’s 2017 and 2018 brand campaigns to promote the solicitor profession. He was also the Warwickshire Law Society’s runner-up for Young Lawyer of the Year in 2018.

Sonehal has a specialism in acting for Claimants and Defendants in high-value, complex matters across: all disciplines of sport (contracts, disciplinaries, discrimination, player ownership, transfers); construction and engineering disputes (extensions of time, loss and expense, termination, defects, professional negligence); claims involving the Human Rights Act 1998; data breach claims; claims involving false imprisonment; inquests; and personal injury and clinical negligence claims (birth injuries, brain injuries, catastrophic injuries, complex fractures, loss of limbs and amputations, sports injuries). Sonehal’s other areas of expertise lie in legal costs, where his skills place him in a strong position during negotiations with his opponents throughout the course of litigation and particularly at CCMCs and other hearings. Always offering a personal service to his clients, he considers offering simple advice in a calm and sympathetic manner as important traits for any lawyer. One of his greatest qualities is his ability to provide the same excellent service to all of his clients, irrespective of their background or financial means. Equally comfortable advising a large multi-national company, a local high street business or single parent, he prides himself on being a formidable opponent with an eye for detail and someone who never stops fighting for his clients; particularly when so many of them find themselves in difficult, stressful and, occasionally, life-changing situations.

Away from work, Sonehal is an enthusiastic advocate for his local community and spends a great deal of time on charitable causes close to his heart. He is passionate about helping children and young adults in any way possible. On the Board of Trustees for the Success for All Educational Trust, he mentors a handful of school and university students each year. In his spare time, Sonehal enjoys the simple things in life, particularly spending time outdoors with his closest friends and family.
